What is the Data SGP?

The data sgp is an important tool for educators and families to understand how students are learning. It is not intended to replace other assessment results, but to provide additional information about a student’s progress in their education. SGPs are based on normative growth models, which measure a student’s performance relative to the performance of their academic peers across multiple assessment years.

Student Growth Percentiles (SGP) are a measure of student achievement based on trends in state test scores. The SGP score for a given student indicates how much the student has learned from their prior assessment year to their current year’s test result. The score is a percentage, with higher percentages indicating more relative growth.

Educators use SGP to identify which students are making progress and which students are not achieving the same level of success as their peers. They can also use SGP to determine whether a student’s growth is increasing or decreasing over time. This can help educators identify a range of potential issues, such as difficulty with particular content or a shift in the way a student learns.

How does the data sgp work?

When a student takes a state test, their score is compared to the scores of students in their grade that have similar MCAS score histories. This includes both typical students and those who have special circumstances, such as learning disabilities or limited English proficiency. The model uses multiple years of data to ensure that the comparison is valid, as well as a statistical algorithm that accounts for the variability in student performance across years.

A student’s SGP score is reported to teachers and parents each year. It is important to note that while SGPs are useful, they are not a complete picture of a student’s education and should be used in conjunction with other assessment and accountability measures. State law does not require the use of SGPs for educator evaluation, and OSPI recommends that districts and schools wait until the data is stabilized before using them for high-stakes purposes.

In addition to SGP, which compares a student’s test score to the scores of their academic peers, the data sgp also provides two other reports that give students and families more detailed information about their growth over time: Window Specific SGP and Current SGP. Both of these reports are available in Star by selecting the appropriate option in the Timeframe drop-down list for the report type.

A Window Specific SGP reflects the growth that a student has made during one testing window and a Current SGP reflects the most recent test results that a student has taken. Both of these SGP reports are helpful for educators and families to know what their students have learned in the past and to anticipate their future learning. When a student receives a Window Specific SGP, hovering the cursor over their bubble displays multiple additional data points including their mean SGP; percent proficient or advanced; and their scale score data and performance levels.
