The Sidney Myer, Neilma Sidney, and Hillman Prizes at the University of Sydney
The Sidney Myer Performing Arts Awards are Australia’s most prestigious prizes for dance, drama, comedy, music, opera, and circus. The award was established in 1984 by the trustees of the Sidney Myer Fund to commemorate the life of Sir Sidney Myer and his love of the arts.
The University of Sydney has excelled at the 2024 Eureka Prizes, known as Australia’s ‘Science Oscars. A team led by Horizon Fellow Dr Mengyu Li from the School of Physics received a Eureka Prize for Early Career Researcher, and Professor Kate Jolliffe from the School of Chemistry won the Eureka Prize for Outstanding Mentor of Researchers.
Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize 2024
The 2024 Neilma Sidney short story prize, supported by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation, is seeking excellent fiction of up to 3000 words themed loosely around the notion of ‘travel’. Imaginative, creative and literary interpretations are strongly encouraged. The winner will receive $5000 in prize money and two runners-up will be published by Overland. The winning story, ‘Who Rattles the Night?’, by Annie Zhang, is about a couple living with ghosts in their new home. The judges are Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop, and Sara Saleh.
Hillman Prize
The Hillman Foundation is a liberal, left-of-center organization that annually awards monetary prizes for journalism and public service. It was founded in 1946 to honor the memory of Sidney Hillman, who served as president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers union, a predecessor to Unite Here and Workers United (now SEIU). The foundation’s leadership includes former Union Here and SEIU president emeritus Bruce Raynor.

The following scholarships, awards and prizes are available to current University of Sydney students. These may be based on academic merit, financial need, research, or other criteria. Applications are due by the end of February each year.
University of Sydney Literary Prizes
The University of Sydney offers a number of literary prizes for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. These are awarded annually and can be based on either academic performance or the quality of an essay. Some of these are highly prestigious, with international recognition. Others are aimed at encouraging and supporting particular types of writing or research. All are administered by the University of Sydney, and students are expected to abide by the terms and conditions set out for each. For more information, see the University of Sydney Literary Prizes page. All entries are reviewed and considered by a panel of judges. The panel’s decision is final. The authors of the selected works will be notified by the end of June each year. The winners will be presented at the University’s annual Scholarly Discourse Awards dinner in November each year. The Scholarly Discourse Awards dinner is a major event and is attended by members of the University’s senior executive, teaching staff and prominent external guests. It provides a forum for the dissemination of research and discussion of topics of interest to academia, industry and the community at large.
