Hong Kong Pools – The Best Places to Cool Off in the Heat
If summer in Hong Kong has you sweltering, take a dip at one of the city’s top pools to cool off and soak up some spectacular scenery. The best ones overlook some of the most breathtaking scenes in the city, so you can get your dose of nature while cooling off and getting a little exercise.
Swimming pools are a staple of public life in Hong Kong, and the city’s many pools have become cultural landmarks in their own right. They are also a great way for people of all ages and backgrounds to meet each other, and are especially popular with children and teenagers.
Hong Kong’s public pools are managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD). During the hot season, it is easy to understand why the number of visitors to these iconic spaces has been growing. This year LCSD has taken measures to address the pool-attendance crisis, including increasing the salaries of seasonal lifeguards and hiring more staff on two-year contracts. However, the influx of visitors still means that some pools are overcrowded.
When the weather is warm, the best places to swim in Hong Kong are at hotels, which often offer a more secluded and relaxing environment than the municipal lanes. Some also boast beautiful views of the cityscape and harbour, making them the perfect place to unwind during a hot day.
The InterContinental Grand Stanford Hotel’s outdoor infinity pool is one of the most stunning in the city. This pristine oasis looks like it is set right into the water, with floor-to-ceiling windows giving you a birds-eye view of Victoria Harbour. Non-hotel guests can purchase a pool pass on Klook to enjoy the gorgeous surroundings and refreshing waters for four hours during the week.
Rosewood’s Asaya Pool is another must-visit if you are looking for a place to swim and relax. It is located on the 6th floor of the hotel, and offers one-of-a-kind views of the Victoria Harbour’s calming waters. Swim a few laps for some morning exercise, then lounge by the pool deck and enjoy fresh coffee, stone-baked pizza or ice cold craft beer at the pool bar.
Another good option for a relaxing swim is The Kerry Hotel’s infinity pool, which overlooks Kowloon and the city skyline. This pool is a favourite among Klook users, and is open to the general public from Monday to Friday. Non-hotel guests can purchase a day pass for the pool on Klook for $500 on weekdays and $700 at the weekends. The pass includes free flow drinks and tapas, so you can stay until sunset to soak up the sun and enjoy a relaxing evening by the pool.
If you’re planning a move to Hong Kong, make sure you factor in the availability of swimming pool facilities when choosing your new home. Larger developments with several residential towers often have a pool or two, while smaller single-tower developments may only have a small outdoor pool – too short for lap swimming but fun for kids to splash around and burn off energy!
