The Sydney Prize

The sidney prize is an award that celebrates excellence in various fields. For example, the Sydney Chess Tournament gives out a number of prizes each year to players who perform well in the tournament. There are also a variety of other Sydney prizes that honor excellence in different fields. One such Sydney prize is the Sidney Hook Award, which is given to individuals who have earned national distinction in scholarship and undergraduate teaching. The National Association of Scholars presents this award every three years at its national conference.

Another prominent Sydney prize is the Neilma Sydney Short Story Prize, which is a literary contest sponsored by Overland magazine. The winner of this competition receives $5,000 and the story will be published in Overland. The 2023 Neilma Sydney Short Story Prize was awarded to Annie Zhang for her story titled “Who Rattles the Night?” The winner was selected from a shortlist of eight finalists. The judges included Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop, and Sara Saleh.

Overland magazine also offers a monthly Sydney prize for outstanding investigative journalism that highlights social and economic injustices. The Hillman Foundation created this prize in memory of its founder, a member of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America and founder of the Congress of Industrial Organizations who dedicated his life to fighting for a better America. The foundation continues his legacy by supporting journalists who illuminate the great issues of our time, from the search for peace to the fight against evictions and poverty.

The National Association of Scholars also awards a Sydney prize each year to an individual who has made contributions to the defense of academic freedom. The prize is named after American philosopher Sidney Hook, and it is presented at the National Association of Scholars’ national conference. The prize consists of a monetary award and a plaque.

In addition to recognizing outstanding investigative work, the Sydney Prize also recognizes writers who use their prestigious status to promote science. This can be in the form of educating the public about scientific issues or developing new technologies that benefit humanity. In recent years, the Sydney Prize has been bestowed on authors such as Hilton Als writing for The New York Times and Ed Yong writing for The Atlantic.

In addition to the prestigious Sydney prize, the Society for the History of Technology also awards a Sydney prize each year for an outstanding scholarly book in the field of the history of technology. The award was established in 1968 and is named after the late Dr. Sidney Edelstein, an expert on the history of dyes and a successful businessman. The prize consists of $3500 and a plaque.
