What is the Hongkong Prize?
The hongkong prize is an award program that recognizes and rewards outstanding researchers in the field of science and technology. Winners receive a cash prize, the opportunity to conduct research at one of Hong Kong’s premier laboratories, and the chance to interact with scientists from around the world who share their passion for innovation and science.
The competition is open to residents of Southeast Asia, mainland China, and the rest of the world. Applicants can enter starting March 1 for a chance to win a free flight ticket to Hong Kong, allowing them to explore the city while immersing themselves in its culture. The prize is awarded in three waves, with Southeast Asian residents being selected first, followed by mainland Chinese residents and international applicants.
Since its inception in 1996, the prize has encouraged students to develop their passion for learning and explore Hong Kong’s history from diverse perspectives. It has also become a benchmark for excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Hong Kong history and has attracted the support of researchers, universities, and innovative enterprises. It is named after Professor Wang Gungwu who championed education. His generous donation, which was matched under the Sixth Round of Government Matching Scheme, was used to establish two prizes at the Department of History in honour of his love for collecting historical documents and for encouraging students to study local history.
In 2022, Bank of Hong Kong launched the HK Alliance for Technology and Innovation PRIZE to attract world-class scientific talent and encourage forward-thinking scientists to form an active research hub in Hong Kong. The PRIZE’s Review Board, comprising an independent Review Committee and Compliance Oversight Team, evaluates candidates based on their scientific research achievements, the application of these achievements, the transformation they have made, and the social or economic value created. It is important to note that the award field reward should not be given to more than 5 persons (or teams) per year.
Arts practitioners in Hong Kong are energetic centers of culture and creativity, reflecting their views on global change through various art forms. They can be found in every corner of the city, from galleries to community centres and schools, bringing together different cultures and communities. The HK Arts Prize recognises their efforts, giving them the recognition and support they deserve.
The prize is a unique initiative to gather ideas on establishing an Official Development Assistance (ODA) programme in Hong Kong, which supports the city’s role as an international hub for development cooperation. The winners will be able to visit some of the most cutting-edge laboratories in Hong Kong and learn about our city’s commitment to advancing global development. The judging panel will be made up of representatives from various industries and government agencies. There will also be an awards ceremony. The winners will be announced in May 2023. The winners will receive a monetary prize, the opportunity to attend seminars and workshops at top institutions in Hong Kong, and the chance to interact with scientists from all over the world who share their passion for science and innovation.
